Our General Neonatal Care (Level 1 & 2) service provides that foundation: routine newborn care for healthy babies, and a step up in support for newborns who need a bit more monitoring or intervention, without requiring full neonatal intensive care.
What Is General Neonatal Care?
Neonatal care is organized in levels based on how much medical support a newborn needs. Level 1 and Level 2 sit at the foundation of that system — they cover the vast majority of newborns, from routine post-birth care to babies who need short-term extra support for issues like mild breathing difficulty, feeding challenges, or jaundice.
Level 1 Care — Well Newborn Care
Level 1 care is for healthy, full-term or near-term newborns who don’t require special medical intervention. This includes:
- Initial newborn assessment and routine care immediately after birth
- Monitoring of vital signs, feeding, and weight in the first days of life
- Basic newborn screening
- Support and guidance for breastfeeding
- Stabilization and immediate care in the rare event a newborn needs a higher level of support
Level 2 Care — Special Care Nursery
Level 2 care (often called a Special Care Nursery) is for newborns who need more monitoring or treatment than a well-baby nursery provides, but who don’t require full intensive care. This typically includes newborns who are:
- Moderately preterm, or recovering after an initial period in intensive care
- Being treated for jaundice (phototherapy)
- Receiving IV fluids or tube feeding support
- Needing closer monitoring of breathing, feeding, or temperature regulation than a well-baby nursery provides

Who Needs Level 1 or 2 Care?
- Every newborn receives some form of Level 1 care immediately after birth
- Babies may need Level 2 care if they’re born slightly early, have mild breathing or feeding difficulty, develop jaundice requiring treatment, or need a short period of closer observation before going home
- Babies recovering from a stay in intensive care (Level 3/4) are often stepped down to Level 2 before discharge
What to Expect During Your Baby’s Stay

When a Baby Is Moved to a Higher Level of Care
If a newborn’s condition requires more intensive support than Level 2 can provide, our care team coordinates a transition to our Advanced NICU (Level 3 & 4), which provides high-frequency ventilator support, inhaled nitric oxide therapy, therapeutic hypothermia, and neonatal surgical care — available on-site, without transfer to another facility.
